Why Do Dental Implants Cost So Little In Cartagena, Colombia? (It’s A Third The Price)

Dental implants can be absurdly expensive in the US, due in part to the cost of labor and the inefficient US healthcare system. Here in Cartagena, Colombia, we charge $1,285 USD for a single titanium implant, post, and porcelain crown while dentists back home in the US often price their implant procedures at $4,000 USD. How is it that we can provide the same quality of dental care at a fraction of the cost? There are many considerations that are baked into this equation and we gladly explain them further below.

Cost of labor is cheaper in Cartagena, Colombia

Generally speaking, the cost of labor in Cartagena, Colombia is significantly cheaper than the US. This directly impacts how expensive housing, food, transportation and other of life’s necessities are. When a Colombian cosmetic dentist puts a price on their dental implants, they must take into consideration how expensive the office rent is, how much to pay the dental staff, how much to spend on marketing, and other factors. When these numbers are significantly less expensive than back home, the total cost of the dental implants and other services goes down as well.

Dental Implant - Dental Tourism Colombia (Dr. Julio Oliver, Cartagena)

Your US dollar goes a lot further in Cartagena, Colombia

The US dollar is a lot stronger in Cartagena, Colombia. You can take a taxi around the entire city for $2 USD and have a world class, romantic meal for only $80. Hotel accommodations are significantly cheaper as well. Not only is cosmetic dental implants here a lot less expensive, your dollar is simultaneously a lot stronger here.

Colombian Healthcare in Cartagena is financially more efficient

Though the world’s most cutting-edge dental work still takes place in the United States, it’s certainly not the most cost-efficient. We don’t have to get into the political details of why the US Healthcare system is this way. Simply understand that costs aren’t as inflated as they are back home due to insurance companies.

Many Colombian cosmetic dentists use the same dental implant manufacturers as dentists back home

Dental care is a good deal more financially affordable in Cartagena, Colombia but that does not equate to cheap quality. In fact, we use the same manufacturers as the best cosmetic dentists back home. We use top American and European dental manufacturing companies like BioHorizons, Microdent, and Zimmer. We’re proud to use these industry leaders at our dental practice.

If you are thinking about getting a lot of dental work done, the cost savings are incredibly attractive. Without exaggeration, you could save tens of thousands of dollars on cosmetic dental implants. You read correctly, not thousands but tens of thousands of dollars. It’s ridiculous what you get charged for in the U.S., simply because insurance companies can get away with it. You won’t imagine how often we hear folks get quoted over $60k for a full new mouth while we could do it here for just $18k, while using the exact same manufacturers. Wouldn’t you like to have an extra $42k in your pocket? That is nothing to sneeze at.

How To Find The Best Colombian Cosmetic Dentist For Your Porcelain or Composite Veneers

Going to Colombia for your composite or porcelain veneers makes a lot of financial sense with the bonus of a vacation, but how do you decide on the best cosmetic dentist for you? Here are a few factors beyond just price to consider when searching for the best dental tourism option for you.

First, which dental veneer is best for you? Composite or porcelain?

Are you a qualified candidate for porcelain or composite veneers?

You should be sure you are a good candidate for this type of dental procedure. If you haven’t seen a local cosmetic dentist or filled out our free virtual consultation form, then please do so now. Understand that just because you’re qualified for composite veneers, it does not mean you are a proper candidate for porcelain; the same goes for the opposite. Typically, pictures of your smile from different angles will be enough for a cosmetic dentist to know.

How long will your composite or porcelain veneers last?

This is an important point to think about. Composite veneers can last up to 8 years while porcelain veneers can last up to 20. This assumes you properly maintain your teeth. When comparing total costs, consider how much “utility” you will get, on average, per year. Depending on your situation, a shorter period for composite veneers might be in order. Porcelain veneers last longer but require a larger financial commitment.

How much time do the porcelain and composite veneer procedures take?

The time it takes to complete these two types of veneers may be considered significant by some. Composite veneers can be done in 1-2 days while porcelain veneers will take 2-5 depending on the quantity of veneers procedure. The reason why porcelain veneers take longer is due to the fact that the permanent porcelain veneers are sent to a lab to be custom manufactured. Composite veneers can be easily done in-house.

This can impact the days off of work you’ll have to take, the number of hotel nights you’ll have to reserve, the extra meals you’ll need to consume, and other factors associated with additional days.

How To Find The Best Colombian Cosmetic Dentist For Your Porcelain or Composite Veneers

What maintenance is needed for composite and porcelain veneers?

Another concern is the amount of maintenance needed for the upkeep of your veneers. Composite veneers tend to stain and chip easily. If you’re one who drinks a lot of coffee or red wine, or smokes, this may be a concern for you. At a minimum, we suggest getting touched up at least once a year. Most cosmetic dentists around the globe can easily do this work so it’s not necessary to come all the way back to Colombia in the case of an issue. You should know that each visit will be an extra so you have to factor that into the total cost when you are thinking about the big picture. On the other hand, porcelain veneers do not need any yearly maintenance at all. This a key advantages porcelain have over composite veneers.

Is there tooth shaving involved with composite or porcelain veneers?

Another point of contention between the two procedures is tooth shaving. There is no teeth shaving involved with composite veneers - with porcelain there is. It is very minimal though, at only 0.3 mm. This is significantly less shaving than normally done for dental crowns. Some patients don’t like the idea of any shaving though and opt for the composites.

Price factors into deciding the best Colombian cosmetic dentist

What is the difference in price between a composite veneer and the cost of a porcelain?

To many, this is the most important factor when considering veneers. Composite veneers range from $200 - $400 USD per tooth in Colombia while porcelain veneers range from $460 - $800 per tooth. Most patients get 20 veneers for a full smile makeover. That’s ten on top and ten on bottom, though you can always do 8 and 8. Some even just do the top row and then do some laser teeth whitening on the bottom to balance out the two shades of white.

Is there a consultation fee with this Colombian cosmetic dentist?

It doesn’t matter if it’s a physical or virtual consultation, at the end of the day, you’re really looking at the total cost of the procedure and the trip down. It doesn’t make a difference if the veneers at Place A are less than expensive than at Place B if the consultation cost makes up for the lower price. In addition, a free consultation limits risk. You don’t have to spend your funds on a dentist you may not end up using.

Does the Colombian cosmetic dentist require an appointment deposit?

Some cosmetic dentists in Colombia ask for an appointment deposit in addition to services rendered. Though it may not be a lot of money (typically in the $500-$1000 range), this should factor this into the total cost as well.

Does the Colombian cosmetic dentist offer free airport pickup?

Understanding that you’re an international patient, many cosmetic dentistry professionals will gladly pick you up from the airport. Some will charge extra, others will do it for free. Make sure to consider this when picking the right dentist for your needs.

Do they have a testimonial page with before and after pictures? Do they have credible video testimonials of their work? How about positive reviews on independent sites like Google Maps?

Cost of living is more affordable in Cartagena, Colombia

The cost of living in Cartagena is significantly more affordable than back home, this directly impacts the price of room, board, education, healthcare, transportation, and other of life’s necessities. When a cosmetic dentist puts a price on their work, they take into account costs like office rent, staff wages, advertising, etc. When all of these costs are less than back in the US, the total cosmetic procedure price drops.

The US dollar is a lot stronger in Colombia. You can take a taxi around the entire city for $2 USD and have a top of the line, premier, major anniversary worthy dinner for two for only $80. Hotels are less expensive as well. You will notice more bang for your literal buck here.

Dental healthcare in Colombia is financially more efficient

Though the world’s cutting-edge medical practice still occurs within the United States, the US healthcare industry is certainly not the most cost-efficient. Do we really need to go into the details? Frankly, you probably wouldn’t be reading this right now if you didn’t feel the same way.

Many Colombian cosmetic dentists use the same manufacturers as back home

Dental work is a lot more affordable in Cartagena, Colombia but that does not mean the quality of workmanship or material is cheap. We, for example, use the same manufacturers as top cosmetic dentists back home. We proudly use top American and European manufacturers like BioHorizons, Microdent, and Zimmer. Cosmetic Dental Implants In Colombia For A Third Of The Price With Dentist Dr. Julio Oliver 2

There are many variables that go into getting cosmetic dental implants in Colombia

Generally speaking, the dental implant procedure is done in two phases, which are 4-5 months apart. The first phase is when any teeth are extracted, bone grafts are done, the implants (rods) are placed in your jaw, and temporary crowns (if applicable) are situated. You’ll need to be in Cartagena for only 4 days (including weekend days) during this first trip.

A few months later, after your jaw bone has fused with the implant, you’ll come back to Dr. Julio Oliver and he’ll add your permanent crowns. These crowns are heavier and will need the implants to be more secure before they are placed.

Before anything though, you should get scans done to learn if your jaw bone density can support dental implants. If not, you may need bone grafts. In cases where you need a good deal of bone grafts, an additional trip will be needed, making the total 3 trips.

Implant procedure costs are split between the two trips.

Why Everyone Comes To Cartagena, Colombia To Get Cosmetic Dental Work (Dr. Julio Oliver)

Why do many people come to Cartagena, Colombia from the US and Canada to get cosmetic dental work done? For starters, the price is about a third of what they’d pay back home. The time the work takes can often be considerably quicker as well. Cartagena is easy to get to and many medical professionals will gladly pick up their international patients from the airport, often recommending hotels near their office. Cartagena is also a safe, touristic city which makes visiting very enjoyable. Since Cartagena, Colombia is in the same hemisphere, you won’t have to fly halfway across the globe or adjust to any jet lag when you land. And one of the best parts about it all is that you get a bonus Caribbean vacation. It’s no secret why many people come to Cartagena, Colombia to get cosmetic dentistry done.

Cosmetic dental work is 70% cheaper in Cartagena, Colombia than back home

Let’s be upfront, money is a major factor in deciding to come to Colombia for your dental care. If it weren’t the case, you’d gleefully go to your (overpriced) dentist back home. You’ll be happy to know that in Cartagena dental care costs are 70% off of what you’re used to be home, even when we use the exact same manufacturers as American and Canadian dentists. That’s a third of the price!

Even with the airfare and lodging, the savings is certainly worth the journey. If you’re getting extensive dental care, you could save tens of thousands of dollars. That’s right, not thousands but tens of thousands. It’s ridiculously what they charge back home for cosmetic dentistry simply because insurance companies can get away with it.

Getting cosmetic dental care in Cartagena, Colombia is often quicker than back home. Colombia as a country has invested a lot into its medical industry, promoting medical tourism as a key component. The Colombian healthcare standard ranks high internationally.

Why is cosmetic dentistry so cheap in Cartagena, Colombia? There are many factors that go into this but know that:

  • The cost of living here is a good deal less. This without question impacts salaries, rent, services, etc.
  • Your hard earned cash goes a lot further in Cartagena than it does back home. While you’re here, you could dine at the nicest establishments and it’ll hit your wallet like Applebee’s would.
  • Insurance companies don’t purposely inflate medical costs here like they do in the US. This is a sad reality of the current Healthcare industry. But don’t worry, you’re outmaneuvering the system by visiting Cartagena.

Cartagena is on the Caribbean coast of Colombia and is easily accessible from North America. There are popular, direct, 2-3 hour flights from Miami, Orlando, and Atlanta, that fly out many times a day. Getting cosmetic dental work in Cartagena, Colombia comes with a bonus Caribbean vacation

One of the most under-appreciated benefits to getting cosmetic dentistry abroad is the fact that it comes with its very own built-in Caribbean vacation! You’ll explore one the of oldest, most beautiful cities in all the Americas. With a vibrant history, rich Caribbean culture, Cartagena is a traveler’s delight.

There is a good deal of things to do while you’re here in Cartagena. These include:

Lay on the beaches

The beaches are some of the world’s best, almost out of a movie.

Explore the old colorful colonial neighborhood

As one of the first colonial cities in the Americas, Cartagena has a rich history. The old colonial neighborhood called the “Cuidad Vieja” has narrow streets with vibrantly colored walls and an artistic air to it. From sculptures to jewelry, there are many local artists showcasing their passion.

Visit the historic sites

Cartagena has many historic sites worth visiting. Here are some of our favorites.

  • Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas: The castillo is the greatest fortress ever built by the Spaniards in any of their colonies. It still dominates an entire section of Cartagena's cityscape today, and should definitely be your first choice of fortresses to visit.
  • Convento de la Popa: On a 150m-high hill, the highest point in Cartagena stands this convent. A beautiful image of La Virgen de la Candelaria, the patroness of the city, is in the convent's chapel, and there's a charming flower-filled patio.
  • Iglesia de Santo Domingo: Santo Domingo is reputedly the oldest church in the city. It was originally built in 1539 in Plaza de los Coches, but the original building succumbed to fire and was rebuilt in its present location in 1552.

Best type of veneers to get in Colombia? Consider other costs beyond price.

So you’re thinking about getting veneers done in Colombia, good for you. However, you’re not sure what kind of veneers you’d like to get. There are two main types of veneers that you should know of, porcelain and composite. Sometimes composites are called 80/20, resin, or direct, while porcelain sometimes goes by 100% ceramic or indirect. Each have their advantages and disadvantages, it’s a question of finding out which one is best for you. Apart from the procedure price, there are other costs and factors to consider before you decide which type you’ll ultimately get.

Porcelain vs composite veneers in Colombia, what’s best for me?

There are a few variables. You need to consider if you’re suited for the procedure, how long the veneers will last, how long it’ll take to get done, what sort of maintenance is required, if there is shoot shaving involved, and travel costs. Let’s break down these considerations in a little more detail as we try to understand the best type of veneer for you.

Porcelain Veneer 2 Dental Tourism Colombia Cartagena

Are you a good candidate for porcelain or composite veneers?

First things first, you must be sure you’re a good candidate for these types of procedures. If you haven’t seen a dentist or filled out our free virtual consultation form, then do so now. Please note that just because you’re qualified for composite veneers, it doesn’t mean you’re a good fit for porcelain; the same goes the other way around. Usually, photos of your teeth from multiple angles will be enough for a dentist to know.

How long do porcelain and composite veneers last?

This is one of the more important factors to consider. Composite veneers can last up to 8 years while porcelain veneers can last up to 20. This, of course, assumes you take proper care of your teeth. Don’t go eating hard candies or opening things with your mouth. When comparing total costs, consider how much utility you will get per year. Depending on your timeline, a shorter period of composites may make sense. Porcelain veneers last longer and require a larger commitment.

How long do the porcelain and composite veneer procedures take?

The time difference between these two is considered by some to be significant. Composite veneers can be completed in 1-2 days while porcelain veneers will take 2-5 depending on the quantity of veneers procedure. Simply put, the reason why porcelain veneers take long is due to the fact that the permanent porcelain veneers need to be sent to a lab to be created. Composite veneers can be done in-house.

These factors can impact the number of days off of work you’ll have to take, the number of hotel nights you’ll have to pay for, the extra meals you’ll need to eat, and other costs associated with extra days.

Porcelain Veneers Dental Tourism Colombia Cartagena 2

What sort of maintenance is required for porcelain and composite veneers?

Another major consideration is the amount of work needed for upkeep. Composite veneers tend to stain and chip easily. At a minimum, we recommend getting touched up once a year. Most dentists around the world can do this work so it’s not necessary to come all the way back to Colombia. Just know that each visit will cost you so you have to factor that into the total price when you’re looking at the big picture. Porcelain veneers do not need any yearly maintenance at all. This is one of the advantages porcelain veneers have over composite.

Do porcelain and composite veneer procedures involve tooth shaving?

Another point of contention between the two procedures is tooth shaving. There is no teeth shaving involved with composite veneers. With porcelain, however, there is. It is very minimal though, at 0.3 mm. This is significantly less shaving than normally done for crowns. Some patients don’t like the idea of any shaving though and thus opt for the composites.

What’s the price of a porcelain veneer vs the cost of a composite?

Down to brass tax, this is the most important factor when considering composite vs porcelain veneers. Composite veneers range from $200 - $400 USD per tooth in Colombia while porcelain veneers range from $460 - $800 per tooth. Most patients get 20 veneers for a full smile makeover.

Conclusion: Porcelain vs composite veneers in Colombia

There are many factors that go into picking the right type of veneers to get when you’re in Colombia. The price of the procedure is a big factor but other important considerations include how long the veneers last, how long it takes to get the veneers done, the maintenance costs, tooth shaving considerations, and other details. Both options will result in radiant smiles, the question is which type is best for you?

Best Questions To Ask When Comparing Cosmetic Dentistry Costs In Colombia

Congratulations, you’ve made the smart decision of exploring dental care abroad. Dental work is just so unnecessarily expensive back home. You know you can get the same quality of care done for a third of the price in South America. You’ve heard from friends and family that Colombia is particularly suited in the medical and dental tourism market, especially for veneers, crowns, and dental implants. The Colombian government has invested a lot in growing the cosmetic dentistry sector.

Here are the questions you need to be asking when comparing cosmetic dentistry options. These will help you make sure you’re comparing “apples to apples.”

Does it cost anything to get a cosmetic dentistry quote?

It’s pretty simple actually but it says a lot. Do they make it easy to get a quote for your veneers or dental implants? Do they at least list their prices on their website? Even before getting a consultation, you want to know the ballpark. This will save you time, money, and energy.

Prices and Procedures

Does the dental consultation cost anything?

Regardless if it’s a physical or digital consultation, at the end of the day, you’re really looking at the total cost of the procedure and the trip down. It doesn’t matter if the veneers at Place A are less than expensive than at Place B if the consultation cost makes up the difference.

A free consultation also limits risk. You don’t have to spend your money on a dentist you may not end up using.

Implants - Best Questions To Ask When Comparing Cosmetic Dentistry Costs In Colombia

What goes into the total price of dental implants in Colombia?

Cost Breakdown

Dental implants have many pricing components, and some cosmetic dentistry offices distort the price of the procedure to lure you in.

For example, we price our Titanium Implant, Post, with Porcelain Crown at $1,285 USD. We purposely list all the components as well. This means that this price includes the implant/rod that goes into your jaw, the post that goes on top of the implant, and the crown/tooth that gets placed at the end. Often, cosmetic dentistry offices will promote implants at $850 but will add the cost of the post and crown at the final billing, to your surprise.

Material

Not all dental implants are made of the same material. Some implants are made of titanium, some are made of zirconia. Some crowns are made of porcelain, some are made of zirconia. Make sure you’re comparing the same dental procedure.

Tooth Extractions

Since not all dental implant patients require tooth extractions, most cannot include the extractions in the price. You need to make sure the quote you get includes the number of extractions you’ll need.

Bone Graft

Like extractions, not all patients will require them. Bone grafts are needed when the jaw doesn’t have enough bone to support an implant. If a patient does need them, they tend to only need 1-2 grams.

Temporary Teeth

Dental implant procedures are done in two phases, the first is when the implants are inserted into your jaw, the second when the permanent crowns are placed. In between these two trips, patients elect to have a lighter, temporary crown placed for those five months. This is up to the patient but should be a factor when getting the whole cost picture.

Veneers - Best Questions To Ask When Comparing Cosmetic Dentistry Costs In Colombia.jpg

What goes into the total price of veneers/dental crowns in Colombia?

Veneers and dental crowns are a little easier to price out than dental implants.

Material

Just like the dental implants, veneers and crowns can be made of many materials. Veneers can be made with composite and porcelain, and are priced very differently. Composite veneers tend to be a fifth of the price of porcelain and last about as long. They require a good deal of maintenance. This is why we only service porcelain veneers now. Crowns can come in a variety of materials, we offer metal, porcelain, and zirconia.

Temporaries

And like the dental implants once more, veneers and crowns have temporary and permanent sets.

When you first sit down with your cosmetic dentistry professional, temporary veneers/crowns are made for two reasons:

  1. The two of you will work together to find the right shape and color of veneer/crown you will want. These will be made of composite.

  2. An impression of the temporary composites will be sent to the lab to be used in making your permanent veneers or crowns. You will wear the composites will your permanent ones are made.

When you’re shopping around for the best prices, make sure the veneer and crown include both the temporary and the permanent. That’s another surprise fee you might find.

For example, we price our veneers at $460 and list them as Porcelain Veneers (Temporary & Permanent) so you know what it’s made of and that this price includes both the temporary and permanent.

Is there an extra cost for medications?

Not all cosmetic dentistry procedures will require medications, but for those that do, like dental implants, you need to know if that cost is included in the price or not. At Dental Tourism Colombia, we include the cost of medications in our final dental implants procedure cost.

Who are the manufacturers? Are they the best?

The dental material manufacturer makes an enormous difference. Make sure you know which manufacturer they use and do some research. Some cheaper cosmetic dentistry offices may have lower prices but will use cheap Chinese manufacturers which won’t last nearly as long as the top American and European makers we use like Zimmer, BioHorizons, and Microdent.

Cartagena - Best Questions To Ask When Comparing Cosmetic Dentistry Costs In Colombia.jpg

How long will this cosmetic dentistry procedure take to complete in Colombia?

As they say, time is money. Each day you’re away from home is a significant factor. Though these costs will be minimal (quality lodge and board in Colombia is relatively inexpensive) it is a factor when comparing total costs.

Final note, it’s not all about price either... it’s about which cosmetic dentist is best

Finally, you know the old adage, you get what you pay for. You should know that price isn’t everything. It is simply one of many considerations. Be sure to look into the reputation of the dentist and reviews of the practice. Do they have an Instagram? Do they have a testimonial page with before and after pictures? Video testimonials? How about reviews on independent sites like Google Maps?

Why Do Porcelain Veneers Cost So Little In Colombia? (It’s A Third The Price)

We charge $460 USD per porcelain veneer while dentists back home in the U.S. sometimes ask for $1350 a tooth! How can we deliver the same quality of care at a fraction of the cost? There are many factors that go into this and we’ll break them down below.

Cost of living is cheaper in Colombia

Generally speaking, the cost of living here is a lot cheaper than back home, this directly impacts how expensive housing, food, transportation and other of life’s necessities are. When a dentist puts a price on their services, they have to take into consideration how expensive the office rent is, how much to pay the staff, how much to spend on advertising, how much the materials are, and other factors. When all of these numbers are a lot less than back home, the total cost can significantly drop.

City Dental Tourism Colombia Cartagena Veneer Price Cost

The US dollar is stronger in Colombia

The US dollar is a lot stronger here. Your money goes a lot further than back home. You can take a cab around the city for $2 USD and have a world class, anniversary worthy meal for two for only $80. Hotels are cheaper too. Not only is dental care here less expensive, your dollar is a lot stronger here. It will get you more bang for your literal buck.

Colombian Healthcare industry is more financially efficient

Though the world’s most cutting-edge work still happens in the U.S., it’s certainly not the most cost-efficient. We don’t have to get into the horrors of the U.S. Healthcare system but know that costs aren’t as inflated as they are back home. In Colombia, you get more for your money.

Many Colombian cosmetic dentists use the same manufacturers as dentists back home

Dental care is a lot cheaper in Colombia but it doesn’t mean the quality is cheap. In fact, we use the same manufacturers as dentists back home. We use top American and European companies like BioHorizons, Microdent, and Zimmer. They’re industry leaders and we’re proud to use them.

Titanium implant, post, and ceramic crown: $1,285 USD

Zirconia implant, post, and zirconia crown: $1,500 USD

Same cosmetic dentistry manufacturers, same quality of care, 70% off U.S. prices

The best news is that we use the same manufacturers as top American and European dentists, BioHorizons, Microdent, and Zimmer. These are high-quality materials used in premier dental care. These crowns won’t stain easily and will last a long time. With proper care, these implants can last you 15+ years. Feel secure that such a significant drop in price does not translate to a drop in quality.

So how does the dental implant procedure work?

Generally speaking, the dental implant procedure is done in two phases. The first phase is when any teeth are extracted, the implants/rods are placed in your jaw, and temporary crowns (if applicable) are placed. You’ll need to be in Cartagena for only 4 days (including weekend days) during this first trip.

A few months later, after your jaw bone has fused with the implant, you’ll come back to Dr. Gonzales and he’ll add your permanent crowns.

Implant procedure costs are split between the two trips.

Getting Composite or Porcelain Veneers In Cartagena With Dental Tourism Colombia (Dr. Julio Oliver)

Let’s face it, dental veneers are expensive in the U.S.

The price tag is outrageous, almost criminal. They’re typically $1,000-$1,500 a tooth! No wonder you’re exploring getting them done abroad. After all, you’ve seen with your own eyes and heard from friends who have come back with perfect smiles at a fraction of the cost. We don’t have to go into too much detail why they’re so expensive (hint: financially, and purposely, inefficient healthcare system and corrupt insurance companies). Visiting Dental Tourism Colombia in beautiful Cartagena is seriously worth considering. You’ll beat the system too!

Composite veneers: $250 USD each

Porcelain veneers: $460 USD each

See our full list of procedures and prices

These prices include both the temporary veneers and permanent ones. When shopping around for prices, make sure the price includes both. Some places will distort the price by only promoting the permanent price.

We use the same manufacturers as top American and European dentists, BioHorizons, Microdent, and Zimmer. These won’t stain easily and will last a long time. So you know that the price won’t mean a drop in quality.

Back up, what exactly are dental veneers?

Simply put, veneers are thin covers/wafers of various materials like porcelain or composite. Similar to a fake nail someone would get at the spa, a veneer goes over a tooth to enhance its appearance. Each veneer is custom made to fit your tooth to achieve that Hollywood smile. With proper care, composite veneers should last 8 years  and porcelain veneers should last 20.

How does the veneer dental procedure work?

Depending on the width of your smile, you’ll need either 6, 8, or 10 per jaw for a complete smile. For a more economical solution, patients will sometimes get just their top row done and then get some laser teeth whitening on their bottom teeth so that everything matches.

Don’t know how many you’d need or if your smile is a good candidate for veneers? Fill out our free virtual consultation form.

All you have to do is upload a few photos of your smile from a few different angles and we’ll tell you in less than 1 business day.

First, Dr. Julio Oliver will sit you down and examine your teeth. Veneers can be placed on most teeth but not all. Your teeth need to be somewhat straight with a normal overbite. Your teeth don’t have to be perfect (if they were, you wouldn’t need veneers) and moderate gaps are fine. If your teeth are too crooked or an overbite too severe, you’ll need to get braces or Invisalign before you can get veneers done.

Next, your teeth a shaven down lightly by a few millimeters, nothing as drastic as getting a crown or bridge. We’ll then take impressions of your teeth and build temporary veneers based off of these measurements.

These temporary veneers serve two purposes:

  1. These impressions and temporary veneers will serve as an example of how you’ll look with permanent veneers. You’ll be able to work with Dr. Gonzales to match the size, shape, and shade of veneer. Once you’re happy, your permanent veneers will be sent to the lab to be created based off of these measurements.

  2. Your permanent veneers take a few days to build. These temporary veneers will be kept in your mouth so you don’t have to walk around with slightly shaved down teeth.

Dental Tourism: 4 Things To Do In Cartagena, Colombia While You’re Here

There’s are many reasons why The Economist named Colombia the #1 country of 2016 and Lonely Planet the #2 country to visit in 2017. One of the main being it’s a Caribbean gem of a city, Cartagena. As Lonely Planet put it “Cartagena is the undisputed queen of the Caribbean coast, a fairy-tale city of romance, legends and superbly preserved beauty lying within an impressive 13km of centuries-old colonial stone walls. Cartagena's old town is a Unesco World Heritage site – a maze of cobbled alleys, balconies covered in bougainvillea, and massive churches that cast their shadows across plazas.” Sounds nice, doesn’t it?

So you’ve either decided to come to Cartagena for quality dental work at a lower cost or are thinking about it. Either way, good for you. Saving 70% on dental care is big deal. Dental Tourism, as we know, is a two part word. Let’s talk about the latter. You won’t be spending the whole time in a dentist’s office now, will you? There are loads of things to do in Cartagena, Colombia when you’re not being treated. Here are just a few ways you can take advantage of this incredible city.

1. Hit the Cartagena beaches

Seems like a no-brainer right? The beaches are some of the world’s best, almost out of a movie. It’s the kinda place you can pay a young man $0.10 to cut open a coconut with his machete and stick a colorful straw into it, all with a smile on his face. It’s a place where fresh mango is available at every corner and the fish you had for lunch was caught that morning.

The closest beach options are at Bocagrande, a mini Miami just a few kilometers southwest of the city center. A better choice, however, is Playa Blanca or Isla Barú, and while both are well-frequented tourist attractions, they offer crystalline waters and white sand.

2. Walk the old colorful colonial neighborhood

As one of the first colonial cities in the Americas, Cartagena has a rich history. The old colonial neighborhood called the “Cuidad Vieja” has narrow streets with vibrantly colored walls and an artistic soul. From paintings to jewelry, there are many local artists selling their work.

Step through La Puerta Del Reloj, a clock tower passageway through Las Murallas, the 400-year stone walls that surround the city, and you arrive at Cartagena’s historic heart, the Old Town. The narrow and winding streets, with their bougainvillea-strewn, pastel-painted balconies, create a glorious sense of suspended time. Grab a cooling agua de coco (coconut water) from any one of a hundred strolling vendors if the heat gets too much, and simply walk the shaded narrow streets.

3. Visit the historic Colombian sites

Cartagena is home to many historic sites worthy of visiting. Here are some of our favorites.

Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas

The castillo is the greatest fortress ever built by the Spaniards in any of their colonies. It’s truly impressive. It still dominates an entire section of Cartagena's cityscape today, and should definitely be your first choice of fortresses to visit. The original fort was commissioned in 1630 and was quite small. Construction began in 1657 on top of the 40m-high San Lázaro hill. In 1762 an extensive enlargement was undertaken, which resulted in the entire hill being covered over with this powerful bastion.

It was truly impregnable and was never taken, despite numerous attempts to storm it. A complex system of tunnels connected strategic points of the fortress to distribute provisions and to facilitate evacuation. The tunnels were constructed in such a way that any noise reverberated all the way along them, making it possible to hear the slightest sound of the approaching enemy's feet, and also making it easy for internal communication. Neat huh?

Convento de la Popa

On a 150m-high hill, the highest point in Cartagena stands this convent. A beautiful image of La Virgen de la Candelaria, the patroness of the city, is in the convent's chapel, and there's a charming flower-filled patio. There is also a chilling statue of a speared Padre Alonso García de Paredes, a priest who was murdered along with five Spanish soldiers for trying to spread the good word. The views from here are outstanding and stretch all over the city.

Iglesia de Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo is reputedly the oldest church in the city. It was originally built in 1539 in Plaza de los Coches, but the original building succumbed to fire and was rebuilt in its present location in 1552. Builders gave it a particularly wide central nave and covered it with a heavy roof, but it seems they were not too good at their calculations as the vault began to crack afterward.

Volcán de Lodo El Totumo

While just 50km northeast of Cartagena, this amusing site is a world away from the colonial city's cleanliness. A myth says that this 15m-high conical vent once erupted fire prior to it being quenched with holy water from a priest who feared it was the work of the devil. Visitors now climb some rather steep steps to the summit before plummeting into a crater bubbling with warm mud. With the consistency of thick cream, it supports prone human bodies almost atop its surface, while people who stand upright sink to just below chest level. It is a rather surreal experience, and locals are on hand to provide massages (bring small bills to tip for this). It’s a pretty wild experience.

4. Practice your Spanish

Did you talk Spanish in high school or college? It’s time to brush up on your skills amigo! You’ll be happy to know that Colombians are known to speak the “slowest” Spanish. As in we don’t speak a mile a minute like some of our South American neighbors. It’s just the way our culture is. It makes comprehension so much easier. Waiters and street vendors will gladly help you with your Spanish.

What will you do in Cartagena, Colombia?

With loads to do, how will you spend your time? You should not only take advantage of the incredible dental care savings you will be receiving thanks to you dental tourism but you should also be taking advantage of the incredible city that you’ll visit. Cartagena, Colombia is a magical place. Find out what the fuss is all about first hand.

5 Reasons Why Cartagena, Colombia Should Be On Your Cosmetic Dental Tourism Shortlist

Congratulations, you’re considering dental tourism as a way to get your dental care done at a much lower cost than you would have otherwise back at home. You’re well on your way to saving quite a bit of cash. With your research, you know by now that there is no real drop in the quality of care you’ll receive abroad and that the U.S. simply has grossly inflated prices. Which comes as no surprise, healthcare in the U.S. is expensive after all. You’re gonna beat the system.

Every year, thousands of Americans travel to other countries to get their medical procedures done. With many destinations to pick from, where do you go?

Here are the reasons why Cartagena, Colombia should be on your dental tourism shortlist.

1. You can save 70% on your cosmetic dental care in Colombia

Let’s not beat around the bush. You’ve done your research on dental tourism because you want to save money on dental implants, porcelain veneers, titanium crowns, or a host of other cosmetic dental procedures. Good for you for shopping around. Did you know however that you can save 70% or more on your dental care by working with Dental Tourism Colombia and coming to Cartagena?

Especially for expensive procedures like All on Four Dental Implants, the money you can save would be enough for a family vacation. It’s crazy to think but do the math. We’re talking about potentially saving $15,000. What could you do with that extra money lying around? Why throw it away by putting it into an inefficient system like U.S. healthcare? It’s your hard earned money after all.

2. It’s a short flight to Colombia

Who wants to travel across the globe to get cheaper, quality dental care when you don’t have to? Unless you’re flying first class, air travel isn’t that glamorous these days. Good news though, Cartagena is located on the Caribbean coast of Colombia which is not far at all from the United States. For example, it’s a short 5-hour flight from NYC. There are direct flights from Miami. That’s it. We’re not talking about flying 17 hours to Thailand to get your dental implants, we’re talking about the same amount of time it would take to drive from NYC to Boston or to fly from NYC to LA. It’s an afternoon instead of an uncomfortable overnight affair. Why spend more time in a cramped air seat then you have to?

Search for flights to Cartagena

3. Not jet lag when you're in Colombia

Colombia and the east coast of the U.S. share the same time zone which means your body won’t have to adjust to any jet lag. If you go to Greece or Hungary, you’ll spend more time adjusting to the new time zone than experiencing the new country you’ll be in. Isn’t that kinda tragic? By going to Cartagena, you avoid that problem entirely. Don’t forget about the trip back! No jet lag means you won’t have to adjust yourself once again after you come back home. In a way, that’s a two for one deal.

4. Colombia is hot right now

No, we don’t mean in the Caribbean, heat sense of the way but yes that kinda hot as well. What we really mean is Colombia, as a country, is hot right now. Everyone loves a comeback story and Colombia for the past two decades has been delivering a great one. Not only did The Economist name Colombia the #1 country of 2016, Lonely Planet has named Colombia as the #2 country to visit in 2017. Those are some pretty serious endorsements but find out what all the fuss is about yourself. You’ll feel it in the air, it’s positivity and optimism. It’s infectious.

5. Cartagena, Colombia is a magical place

There is nothing quite like Cartagena. It’s a modern city with an old colonial neighborhood center. It feels like time travel in a way when you walk along the border between the two areas. The old colonial neighborhood called the “Cuidad Vieja” has narrow streets with vibrantly colored walls and an artistic soul. The people are warm and the smell of the ocean is ever-present. It’s refreshing.

The beaches are some of the world’s best. It’s the kinda place you can pay a young man $0.10 to cut open a coconut with his machete and stick a colorful straw into it, all with a smile on his face. It’s a place where fresh mango is available at every corner and the fish you had for lunch was caught that morning. It’s a Caribbean paradise. Taking a walk along the old city’s walls during sunset is an absolute must as well. The walls are filled with fossilized coral which helps echo the whole time travel sentiment. It’s beautiful.

As one of the first colonial cities in the Americas, Cartagena has a rich history of epic, underdog battles which you can learn all about while visiting the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas. Dominating approaches to the city by land or sea, the landmark fortress was built by the Spanish during the colonial era.
